Over 2,100 Type 97 Chi-Ha were made, this made it the second most produced Japanese medium tank of World War II, after the smaller Type 95 Ha-Go. The Type 97 saw extensive action during the Second Sino Japanese War, against the Soviet Union during the Battles of Khalkhin Gol and throughout World War II.
The Type 97 was the standard medium tank of the Japanese army. Although weighing only 15 tones, its excellent speed and mobility and no more than 33mm of turret armour and 26mm of hull armour, it would be considered a light tank in any other contemporary army.
